Working model of how HIV proteins affect B cells leading to aggressive B-cell lymphoma. 1. HIV-infected cells release soluble HIV proteins in the serum of HIV infected individuals. Macrophages form conduits and transport Nef into B lymphocytes. 2. HIV infection combined with presence of HIV proteins lead to hyperactivation of B cells and clonal expansion with accumulation of genomic events leading to transformation. 3. Progression to malignant phenotype, maintained by oncogenic HIV proteins. 4. Development of aggressive HIV-associated lymphoma with abdominal, lymph node and bone marrow involvements
